Mia Mia North Queensland

Mia Mia is a small agricultural community growing sugar cane about one hour’s drive from Mackay in North Queensland. The nearest shops are at Mirani 20 minutes’ drive away. The word Mia mia is an Australian Aboriginal word that has been defined as both ‘gunyah’ or native hut and as a ‘view’ or ‘look out’. The Mia Mia Range was mentioned on Queensland maps in 1883 as was Mia Mia Crossing. Mount Mia Mia was found to be named on Queensland maps in 1910. It could be suggested that the agricultural community of Mia Mia was named after the Australian Aboriginal word meaning ‘view’ or ‘look-out’.
